Practical tips

• EES biometric entry

  The EU's Entry/Exit System requires fingerprints and a photo at first entry. Allow an extra 30–45 minutes at CDG passport control.

• Tipping in France

  Service is included by law (service compris). A euro or two on the table for good service is generous; 5–10% on a large restaurant bill is a lovely gesture, never expected.

• Water at restaurants

  Ask for une carafe d'eau — it's tap water, free, and completely normal to request. Don't accept bottled by default.

• Getting the check

  The check does not come until you ask. Say 'L'addition, s'il vous plaît.' Wait staff consider it rude to rush you.

• VAT refund (détaxe)

  Non-EU visitors can reclaim ~12% on purchases over €100 in a single shop, same day. Ask for the détaxe form; process at the airport before check-in.

• Sundays in Paris

  Most boutiques and many shops are closed. Museums, brasseries, and the Champs are open. Plan Galeries Lafayette on a weekday.

• Taxis vs Uber

  Both work well. From CDG, the flat-rate taxi to Right Bank is €56; Left Bank €65. Uber runs slightly cheaper off-peak.

• Chargers · Type E/F 220V

  Bring EU plug adapters (round two-prong). Modern iPhone/laptop chargers handle 220V automatically. Do not bring a hairdryer from the US.

• Disneyland Paris tipping

  Not customary. Restaurants inside the parks include service. Don't feel compelled to add anything unless service was exceptional.

• CDG departure timing

  Arrive 3 hours before international flights. Terminal 2E is often busy at 9am; add 30 minutes for détaxe processing before you check in.
